Amour debout

Mélina Bernier

The poetic suite Amour debout reveals first and foremost some of the many aspects of poverty: destitution, loss, violence, exclusion. The author’s writing illustrates this by using short verses, a minimum of words, and strong images. Before our eyes, a failing world is depicted, which, progressively, starts to shine again, as if an alchemist had suddenly found an operative formula. The destroyed worlds, empty and cold, are transformed, rebuilt. Anonymous characters circulate. Characters in love. A transformation by way of love occurs. Amour debout is a text that brings us back to the basic things in life, that recreates, from scratch, love and beauty, since only love can make us “laugh anew.”

Praise for Amour debout

An impressive fragility emerges from reading the book. Its language reveals itself as a brittle material: a fragility that isn’t the responsibility of the magic of words, but of its ramification and restraint.

Charles Dionne, Poème sale

Some may deem these fragments dry; others will detect the consistency and strength that emerge from the whole. Do we need to understand all of a story’s workings in order to discern its deep humanity, its disturbing fragility? I would like to think not.

Lucie Renaud, La recrue du mois

A book to savour slowly, to be read silently or aloud, in order to capture all of its density.

Geneviève Désilets, Le Sabord
